Support for a call by the Catholic Church for a month of Prayer and Fasting for Marriage and Families throughout October 2016 was confirmed on 15 September 2016, by a gathering of Christian leaders from all over Australia.

James Condon the head of Strategic Church Relations for the National Day of Prayer and Fasting said, “Support for this historic initiative by the Catholic Church is gathering momentum. We congratulate the Catholic Church, together with all these leaders, for showing leadership and taking the initiative to launch a call for a month of Prayer and Fasting for Marriage. The Bible is clear on this important issue, “Jesus said for this reason a man shall leave his mother and father and the two shall become one flesh”.

Most recently the Lutheran Church of Australia and the National Office of the Baptist church of Australia confirmed their support for this crucial prayer call. Last week I spoke to the Anglican Archbishop, Glen Davies, and he assured me of the Sydney Anglican Diocese support for this wonderful initiative as best as they are able considering the late notice.”

Condon continued, “Key Christian Aboriginal leaders are also supporting this call for prayer and fasting to protect marriage from redefinition. Marriage between a man and a woman is sacred in Indigenous culture. For more information regarding the Indigenous perspective on the sacredness of marriage go to: www.ulurubarkpetition.com

Warwick Marsh, a coordinator of the National Day of Prayer & Fasting said, “For this period of prayer and fasting we are asking you to fast as you are able. Some might choose a vegetarian ‘Daniel Fast’, others might choose to miss a meal a day, or fast certain days of the week. Whether you choose to do a full fast or a partial fast, the important thing is to do ‘something’. See this YouTube where I share tips for prayer and fasting.  To inspire you in your prayers the team at the National Day of Prayer and Fasting, in cooperation with the Canberra Declaration, are going to provide a daily email devotion.

This daily digital inspiration is intended to help Christians to understand the joy of the divine plan for marriage and human sexuality, to celebrate it, to mourn our failures to uphold it, and to mobilise Christians to pray and act in a God-honouring way in the current debate around the redefinition of marriage. It will do so by offering a story, a Scripture, and a prayer each day with an appropriate picture and video link.

To encourage people to sign up for the daily devotional we are offering access to free download copies of an ebook by John Piper called “A Hunger for God: Desiring God Through Fasting and Prayer,” plus two other publications “31 Days to a Better Marriage” and “21 Reasons Why Marriage Matters.”  To get the free daily devotional delivered to your inbox throughout the month of October click here.
